Tiny Places: A Rant

Has the economy with all the talk of recession, crisis, impending doom, collapse… gotten you down? At first I thought – I am safe, this in no way can affect me. Hell if things get that bad – I will just move back into my car/tent. At this point I may even welcome the change. But now I am starting to worry – with tent cities popping up all over the US filled with families thrown out of their homes, kicked out of their jobs, and tossed back onto the land – where will all the hippies throw their tents? Is there enough BLM land for us all? Wait a minute – what are they going to do about that 14-day limit?
So today I read one of the most popular stories on CNN, “Downsizing to 100 square feet of bliss.” Californians are ditching their thirty thousand square foot homes and moving into backyard forts at an alarming rate. The funny thing about this though… is that they can’t find anyone to buy their crazy large homes – so they are living in playhouses while still footing their enormous mortgages. Simplicity or sheer stupidity – you be the judge? I wonder how many square feet are in the average VW van… just wondering.
I think what this all means is that McMansions were just a fad and a mal-adaptive evolutionary step. We all wish to return to our cave dwelling, thatched roof, tree house living roots. In an essence, dirtbagging is an adaptive evolutionary strategy and we will survive – even flourish with great fitness.
